In a world of #metoo, continued wage inequality, and women living in poverty at higher rates than their male counterparts, it is important for us to celebrate the successes of women, both within Perks WW and throughout the tech industry. Here at Perks WW, almost 50% of the workforce are women and more than 50% of our managers are women. As a female CMO I am very proud of those statistics. We are far from the days when I worked in other (large) technology companies and was typically the only woman in the room. Because I am of the baby boomer generation, I look back in horror to the days when jobs posted in the newspaper were divided between women’s jobs (Gal Friday anyone?) and men’s jobs (anything technical).
As I look to the steps we still need to take within Perks WW (and most other companies), I would tell you that we need to work harder to integrate women into development teams. We, and all other technology companies, must embrace women in STEM and hire these smart, young women, first as part of intern programs and then as permanent members of the workforce. This integration is fraught with challenges, especially when you consider that men are from Mars and women are from Venus; thought processes are different between the sexes and cannot be ignored.
At a time when companies like Uber have so significantly struggled over their treatment of women, it is time for business leaders to take a stand and drive change within each of their organizations.
I invite each and every person in a hiring position to make a change, do one thing differently—develop a mentoring program to ensure everyone in your organization (men and women) know how to grow and increase their skill sets, develop relationships with various women in STEM groups in your locations. What’s my commitment to promote change? I plan to reach out to a local Little Rock organization headquartered in the same building as our corporate office, Women’s Foundation of Arkansas (https://womensfoundationarkansas.org/get-involved/) to understand how I can volunteer.
