How Tools Can Increase Employee Recognition: Part 1

This is the first installment of a series of articles discussing some of the tools and methods that are key to the success of your Employee Recognition solution.

 

Employee Appreciation: It isn’t rocket science that people who feel appreciated will perform at a higher level than those who do not feel appreciated.  We know what appreciation is and why it's important, but how do you implement appreciation?

 

 

Peer-to-Peer sharing is a proven method which can drastically influence company culture.  Providing employees a means to acknowledge their peers directly and personally is key.  When peers acknowledge they appreciate the impact of their coworker's actions, employee engagement is instant. Personalizing the communications is paramount. Including a quick personal message with a recognition explaining what someone has done to make your day more enjoyable can be priceless.  

 

Community:  As human beings we all share a desire to be part of something.  Building on the employee recognition aspect allows for peers and managers alike to “share in the sharing”.  Activity feeds and weekly emails publicly display the appreciation behavior.  Not only is it pleasant to receive appreciation, but having a constant view of all of the appreciations being shared can consistently improve a company’s culture. 

 

Purpose:  Purpose is an element of engagement that works side by side with appreciation and community.  Why is it important?  The importance of purpose is providing meaning to our daily lives.  In today’s workforce, there are a vast number of employees who go to work without acknowledging any kind of purpose. When employees feel a sense of purpose, appreciation and community flourish.  After all, without a purpose, would there be any reason for appreciation?  A reason to share?  What is purpose exactly?  Purpose is the reason we are all working together.  The reason you might be reading this blog post.

 

Synopsis:  When people come together to achieve a specific goal or objective (purpose), providing individuals with the means to share their gratitude with others (appreciation) in a personal and public manner (community) allows for a company’s culture to prosper.
