Does Teleworking Increase Employee Engagement?

October 24, 2014 Perks WW Employee

Employee EngagementImagine a world where more and more people work from home. That would mean less construction for business offices, less pollution for commuting, more snack breaks, stretching, and more…employee engagement? That’s right.

Of course working from home is not ideal for everyone. It takes a strong-willed individual to stay on track with life’s daily distractions around the house, but don’t those distractions exist at work as well?

According to a recent Engage for Success article,  a new law passed in the UK this past June states that individuals who have worked for more than 6 months at a given company have the right to request more flexible work hours. In effect, a rise in BYOD (Bring your own Device) may ensue, meaning a majority of employees have the ability to work from home using their personal laptops.

Here’s the rub:

A recent study focused on UK office workers revealed that if  employees were offered to work BYOD style, 46% of workers would work overtime and 59% would prefer to use their own device at home. While working overtime is a great benefit to employers, it’s not such a great trade-off for employees. But, with that said, working from home does have some unique benefits. Being at home with family, especially if you have or plan on having children, is a huge plus. No more day-care woes or baby-sitter troubles! Also by reducing longer commutes, employees reduce their risk of rush hour accidents and lessen overall CO2 emissions.

The BYOD frenzy has not hit the States yet, but more and more people are working from home than ever before. According to this article in the New York Times, the amount of remote workers in the U.S. has risen 79 percent from 2005 to 2012. In total, there are 3.2 million remote workers in the United States, making up an estimated 2.6% of the American workforce according to the American Community survey.

So What do You Think?

If flexible working becomes a more regular trend in the States, are you prepared to stay at the office or in your pajamas?
